Kate Middleton is known to be a devoted mother who deeply treasures her time with her three young children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. However, performing royal duties sometimes requires being away from her family for extended periods. In 2022, Kate accompanied Prince William on a tour of the Caribbean, leaving George, Charlotte, and Louis at home in the UK. Former royal author Katie Nicholl, who has witnessed Kate's tours firsthand, revealed that these prolonged separations from her children are quite difficult for the Princess of Wales.

Despite enjoying enormous privileges as a senior royal including round-the-clock nannies and household support, Kate prefers that her own mother Carole Middleton assists with childcare whenever she is away. According to Nicholl, it gave Kate great comfort and confidence knowing her children were in their grandmother's loving and familiar care during overseas trips. The author observed how much being apart from George, Charlotte and Louis is a "wrench" for Kate. In past tours like the 2016 trip to Bhutan, Kate has openly expressed the challenge of leaving her family behind.

During the 2022 Caribbean tour, Kate managed to impress observers with her professionalism and poise amid controversies over calls for Jamaica and other realms to become republics. Back in the UK, George and Charlotte proudly accompanied their parents to Prince Philip's memorial service, while the youngest, Louis, likely remained at home with Carole as has been the family's practice. Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond has remarked that Kate's exceptional commitment to her role despite the difficulties of prolonged separations from her children demonstrate why she is shaping up to be the ideal future Queen.

On October 15, as part of Baby Loss Awareness Week observed annually in the UK, Kate used her prominent social media platform to send a personal message of love, strength and hope to anyone affected by the loss of a child. Baby Loss Awareness Week aims to support bereaved parents and families, increase public awareness, and help prevent future pregnancy and infant loss. Kate noted the 'wave of light' event happening that night, inviting people to light candles during a global moment of remembrance.

The Princess of Wales posted a photo of a candle from British brand Plum and Ashby stamped with the #waveoflight tag to underline her solidarity with bereaved families. By closing the post with her initial 'C', Kate signaled it came directly from her to those grieving the deaths of babies too young. Having experienced loss herself as Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, suffered an ectopic pregnancy in 2001, Kate is determined to use her platform to comfort others in their darkest hours.

Kate has advocated for issues affecting mothers and babies throughout her royal career. In 2020 during Baby Loss Awareness Week, she visited the Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology at Imperial College London to learn about research into pregnancy loss and premature birth. As parents to George, Charlotte and Louis themselves, the Cambridges have also marked previous occasions by posting supportive messages online. Tragically, other royals like Zara Tindall and Meghan Markle have publicly disclosed their own misarriages over the years.

On October 8th, 2023, Kate made her first public appearance alongside William since completing cancer treatment in the summer - a powerful sign of her recovery and commitment to service. The couple met with grieving families and emergency responders after the tragic stabbings in Southport. Though intended as a solo engagement for William, Kate accompanied him to express empathy and strength to those suffering immense loss. After laying a poppy wreath at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, Kate is planning her customary Christmas Carol concert at Westminster Abbey to celebrate family, community and hope.
