Prince Harry attended a gala event in New York this past weekend that honored survivors of childhood abuse. The dinner was organized by the World Health Organization and saw dignitaries from across Europe convene. However, there was a noticeable absence from Harry's side - his wife Meghan Markle. Fresh from their move to California, Harry found himself once again navigating the intricate protocols and rigid hierarchical structures of European royalty without Meghan by his side.

Judging by some of the photos from the event, Harry appeared to struggle reconnecting with his Royal relatives. One rather awkward attempt saw Harry reach out for what can only be described as a cringe-worthy hug with Queen Matilda of Belgium. It's clear from their body language that Matilda was intent on maintaining a respectful royal distance. Harry, seemingly trying to channel his more casual Californian self, moved in for an embrace but was gently rebuffed by the Queen placing a restraining hand on his shoulder.
Body language expert Judy James noted that in photos from this moment, Harry appears uncomfortable and struggling with his noticeably diminished status within the Royal family structure since stepping back from duties. Pictures show Harry loitering awkwardly in the background while Matilda and other dignitaries network up front. It's almost as if there was an unspoken "We're Not Hugging Harry" convention going on that he wasn't privy to.

Harry's eagerness for connection and belonging was plain to see, but sadly he was left looking thoroughly lost and out of place as dignified royals like Queen Matilda comfortably work the room with their signature poise and grace. One can only imagine what was going through Harry's mind as he grasped at any chance for engagement or validation in this foreign environment that was clearly not welcoming him with open Royal arms.
Harry's casual dress didn't help matters either. While Matilda and others were picture perfect in their formal attire, Harry showed up looking as though he had just rolled out of bed. Was this a deliberate choice to distance himself from stuffy protocol now that he lives freely in California? Or did he just lose a fashion bet with Meghan before leaving home? Next to Matilda's elegant presence, Harry's disheveled appearance only added to his overall floundering and didn't do him any favors in fitting back among European nobility.

Many can't help but wonder - did Harry truly expect that every Royal would embrace him as a long lost prodigal nephew returning to the fold? It seems a bit naive and unrealistic given the rigid conventions of Royal life and relations. Most European dignitaries are certainly not as physically affectionate or informal as the casually affectionate Californian lifestyle Harry and Meghan now seem most comfortable with.

The most entertaining part of Harry's endeavor was undoubtedly his bewildered facial expressions and body language throughout. One can only imagine what was going through his mind as he tried in vain to cling to Queen Matilda's subtle yet resolute refusal of an embrace. His facial expression was a picture of confused desperation - it was as if he were pleading internally "Somebody please acknowledge me!". Ultimately, the jarring juxtaposition of Matilda's polished poise beside Harry's disarray left him floundering helplessly in her Majesty's regal wake.

It makes you wonder - if Meghan had been by Harry's side, would things have gone differently? Decked out in one of her elaborate gowns no doubt commissioned specially for the event, would Meghan have commanded the spotlight and attention, easing Harry's visible discomfort? Or would her presence have only served to further highlight Harry's diminished status as the almost forgotten little brother within the House of Windsor?

In the end, while Harry may have attended the dinner with hopes of rekindling old bonds, the reality was instead a cringe-inducing spectacle that saw him painfully out of place. Between awkward aborted hugs and bewildered mien, he found himself unceremoniously reminded that in the world of the European establishment and nobility, it's certainly not all fairy tales - especially for a Prince that has sailed far off the Royal course. For Harry, this bittersweet homecoming served only to reinforce how fully detached he has become.
