Harry decided to FaceTime Meghan and their children just moments before he was set to take the stage at the high-profile Concordia Summit event in New York last week. However, the conversation between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex apparently took an unexpected turn, with Meghan allegedly yelling at Harry and demanding that he mention her in his upcoming speech. This latest episode has exacerbated long-standing tensions regarding Meghan's role and relationship with Prince Harry.

According to sources who spoke to People magazine, Meghan grew upset during the call and berated Harry for not committing to referencing her in his speech for the summit. It is said that her tone became raised and tense as she insisted Harry mention her contribution to the causes they support. Those familiar with the situation said Meghan appeared to want assurance that she would retain prominence in the work and initiatives championed by her and Harry as a couple.

This purported tantrum has been met with criticism from many observers. Royal commentator Emily Andrews was blunt, calling it "just another example of Meghan's apparent need to be the center of attention, even when the spotlight should be on her husband." She argued that as a senior member of the royal family, Harry is perfectly capable of delivering remarks without constantly interweaving references to his wife. The episode, Andrews said, reveals Meghan's unwillingness to allow Harry moments of public focus solely on his own roles, duties and accomplishments.

Others share concerns that Meghan's involvement risks undermining Harry's independence and leverage in his position. Some believe it presents Meghan as manipulating circumstances to prioritize promoting her own image and profile, even at events meant to highlight Harry's work. Questions have been raised about whether Meghan respects appropriate boundaries between actively supporting Harry versus interfering inappropriately in his responsibilities as a royal.

However, Meghan does have defenders who refute such criticisms. Royal biographer Omid Scobie points out that as Harry's spouse, it is understandable and reasonable that Meghan wants to feel involved in the causes they advocate for together. From this perspective, it is unfair to characterize an engaged partner like Meghan as simply self-promoting or attention-seeking. Scobie says their relationship is naturally collaborative given their shared commitment to the same initiatives and charitable goals.

Regardless of differing opinions, the alleged incident has reignited widespread discussion around Meghan and Harry's dynamic as a couple. Some experts believe it could add to tensions between the Sussexes and other senior royals, who are said to be increasingly frustrated by Meghan's perceived domination over Harry's affairs. Royal historian Robert Lacy suggested the perception that Meghan regularly inserts herself into and attempts to overshadow Harry's work will "not sit well" with Buckingham Palace.

The relationship between Meghan and the royal family was already strained before she and Harry stepped back from their duties and moved to California in 2020. Rumors of problematic rifts and challenging behaviors from Meghan towards staff had dogged the couple for years. But their decision to leave the UK and criticize the institution of the monarchy in their bombshell Oprah interview last year further inflamed tensions across the Atlantic.

Some now worry that incidents like the reported Concordia Summit phone call will fuel criticism that Meghan is an overbearing, self-centered influence on Harry from skeptical traditionalists within the royal fold. However, supporters of the couple insist they work together as partners striving for important goals and that media coverage often unfairly maligns Meghan's character. Either way, disagreements over Meghan's role continue fueling drama and troubled relations for the once-beloved Sussexes, seemingly at odds with both the press and royal family alike in their new American life.
