As parents, Prince William and Princess Kate said they "cannot begin to imagine" what the families of those killed and injured in the Southport attack are going through. In a joint statement, the Prince and Princess of Wales said "We send our love, thoughts and prayers to everyone involved in this tragic incident. This was a heinous and senseless attack."
While the details of the Southport attack are still emerging, it's clear this was an act of violence that has devastated the local community. On behalf of the royal family, William and Kate expressed their condolences and support for all those impacted. They also thanked the emergency responders, acknowledging the difficult and traumatic scenes they faced in coming to the aid of others during this time of crisis.
It's been over a decade since Prince William first started courting Princess Kate, but the pair have come a long way since their early days of dating as students at St. Andrews University in Scotland. From those initial years getting to know each other, to their royal wedding in 2011, William and Kate have built a strong marriage and family together. However, William recently revealed one gift he got Kate early in their relationship that didn't seem to go over that well.

While appearing on Peter Crouch's podcast in 2020, William said he once bought Kate a pair of binoculars as a gift. At the time, he thought it was a nice present but Kate apparently "never let him forget it." This happened in the early stages of their engagement, suggesting the binoculars gift may have been one of the first presents William chose for his bride-to-be. Looking back, the prince admitted he had "no idea" why he selected binoculars and acknowledged it was probably not the best choice.
Thankfully, William seems to have improved his gift-giving skills in the years since! Just this past May, the prince received some thoughtful presents for Kate and their three children during an engagement with the Army Air Corps, of which he is colonel-in-chief. Kate was given a tartan wrap, William received a scarf, and their kids George, Charlotte and Louis each got wooden model helicopters.
It's lovely to see the military taking the time to consider appropriate gifts for the whole Wales family. As Kate continues her recovery from cancer treatments, the thoughtful gifts no doubt brought some cheer. Royal fans on social media praised the considerate gesture towards both the Princess and troops. While things may not have gone perfectly with that first binoculars gift long ago, it's clear William's relationship with Kate has grown into a loving marriage and family over the years.

As Kate's period of leave from public duties continues to allow her to focus on treatment and rest, updates on her health and recovery are always met with caring messages of support from the public. Since announcing her breast cancer diagnosis in April, the Princess of Wales has appreciated all the well-wishes. She is currently based at her family home of Adelaide Cottage as she undergoes chemotherapy, aiming to return to royal engagements once complete.
William has been at her side offering comfort and taking on additional responsibilities in her absence. Their children too have certainly been providing distractions and joy during what is no doubt a difficult time. The whole royal family has come together in rallying around Kate with love and encouragement. Thanks to early detection and today's medical advances, the prognosis for breast cancer is positive. All those following Kate's progress will no doubt be pleased once she is given the all clear and can put this health battle behind her.

In the meantime, it's heartening to see how organizations like the Army Air Corps have demonstrated thoughtfulness for the wellbeing of both the Princess and her family. Minor gestures like gifts go a long way, especially for those experiencing challenging life events. While William's binoculars selection didn't quite hit the mark, his relationship with Kate has stood the test of time and developed into a true partnership. With continued support from their loved ones, here's hoping for a full and speedy recovery for the Princess of Wales.
