Over the past few months, there has been intense debate around Prince Harry and whether he should retain his royal titles following various controversial episodes. This debate was further fueled by the release of Harry's memoir "Spare" which made several bombshell allegations against the royal family.

In the book, Harry shared insights into his life within the royal institution and his decision to step back from royal duties three years ago along with his wife Meghan Markle. When they announced their departure in 2020, the couple relinquished their status as working royals but were allowed to retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles.

However, according to a recent poll conducted by Express.co.uk, a majority of their readers strongly agree that Harry should be stripped of his titles. The poll found that 97.2% of over 21,000 respondents believe Harry should lose his titles, while only 3% said he should not.

Conservative commentator and former aide to Margaret Thatcher, Nigel Gardner, has publicly called for Harry and Meghan to be stripped of their royal titles. He argued on Twitter that their "vicious campaign" against the royal family amounts to a "betrayal of the British people." They have become one of the most "unpopular and distrusted" couples in modern British royalty, he added.

UK conservative MP Bob Seely is also planning to introduce a private member's bill that could amend the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act and remove Harry and Meghan's royal titles. This comes as Harry made various damaging allegations against the royal family in his memoir "Spare" and the Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan."

Following their marriage in 2018, Harry and Meghan were gifted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles by the late Queen Elizabeth II. They also received the subsidiary titles of Earl and Countess of Dumbarton and Baron and Baroness of Kilkeel.

According to the rules of male primogeniture and protocols set by King George V in 1917, Archie and Lilibet, the children of Harry and Meghan, should have been given His/Her Royal Highness (HRH) styles and be called prince and princess. However, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believes it's now unlikely they will receive such titles given the family rift.

He told Fox News Digital: “The issue of Archie and Lily and whether they see their Royal cousins and if so when is another imponderable in this destructive circus...they should automatically be given HRHs but it is up to the new monarch. This surely cannot happen now and not only because of a slimmed Down monarchy.”

When recently interviewed on CBS 60 Minutes, Harry was asked about potentially relinquishing his dukedom. He replied "What difference would that make?” in response. However, historian David Starkey disagreed and told GB News that Harry should not be stripped of his titles.

According to Starkey, removing the titles would only give Harry more attention. “He will naturally just fade away. Harry is perpetually declining in the order of succession. Why give them the satisfaction of the attention?” he argued. Despite the debate, King Charles III has no power to remove dukedoms himself - an act of Parliament would need to pass to amend the law.

Readers of  largely supported removing Harry’s titles, with one commenting “yes strip all titles and privileges.” Some even believed he should lose his place in the line of succession. As the discussion around the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s future roles continues, it’s clear public opinion is still strongly divided on this complex issue.
