This year has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging in recent memory for the Prince and Princess of Wales. For Catherine in particular, 2022 began with a significant health scare that required her to take time away from her royal duties to recover. Both she and William have had to face a situation that has tested their tight-knit family like never before.
While navigating Catherine's health issues behind closed doors has been an extremely difficult emotional experience, sources close to the family say that William has gone into full "protection mode" for the sake of his children. It's now well-known that Catherine, who was born Catherine Middleton, expressed a preference to go by her full first name rather than the more informal "Kate" prior to her 2011 marriage to William. According to sources, one factor that upset William in particular during his wife's health issues was the refusal of his estranged brother Prince Harry to address Catherine by her legal name when offering messages of support. Another source close to Catherine noted this lack of courtesy from Harry as having contributed to the continuing fraught relationship between the brothers. The reluctance from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to acknowledge Catherine's preferred name was described as an unnecessary irritation at a difficult time, believed to have informed the Wales's decision not to reply to Harry and Meghan's well-wishes.

Through it all, friends say Prince William has been a rock of strength and support for his family both emotionally and practically. He has gone above and beyond to ensure Catherine's comfort as well as the welfare of their three young children. At a dinner party attended by the couple as well as William's ex-girlfriend Jecca Craig, things took an awkward turn during a game of "Never Have I Ever" when Craig declared "I've never dated two people at this table." Realizing the implicit reference to her past with William, everyone grew stunned, while William was said to glare daggers at Craig, murmuring under his breath about her surprising revelation to Catherine. While initially frustrated, William was able to brush off the uncomfortable incident without incident and he and Catherine maintained a friendly relationship with Craig thereafter, even inviting her to their royal wedding.

That royal wedding in 2011 at Westminster Abbey saw Catherine take on the iconic title once held by William's late mother Princess Diana - a responsibility she had initially expressed apprehension about due to the inevitable comparisons and public scrutiny. But William reassured her that she need not be replacements, emphasizing how Catherine would make the role her own while helping him build their future family. If Diana were still alive today, she surely would have beamed proudly at the remarkable parents and spouses William and Catherine have become. She never got to witness William as a husband or father, but would have taken enormous happiness from seeing how he has risen to support Catherine fully through recent hard times. While the ongoing situation with Harry continues to upset him deeply due to his brother's accusations and behaviors, William ultimately knew maintaining an antagonistic relationship served no good use and chose to walk his own calm, dignified path forward for the sake of his wife and family above all else.
