On July 22nd, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge marked Prince George's 11th birthday by sharing a new photograph of the future king on their official Instagram account. However, eagle-eyed royal fans may have spotted that this new portrait actually continues William and Kate's recent tradition of breaking long-standing norms when it comes to sharing images of their children.

For years, it was standard practice for the Cambridge family to provide official photographs of George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis to the press under an embargo ahead of their birthdays each year. These pictures would then be simultaneously released on the eve of the special day. However, William and Kate began changing this protocol in April 2022 when they shared a casual snapshot of Prince Louis directly to social media on his actual 6th birthday.

They proceeded to do the same for Charlotte's 9th birthday portrait in May. This departure from releasing images under embargo was thought to be a response to the unprecedented times the family was facing amid Kate's ongoing treatment for an undisclosed illness. It also helped them avoid further criticism after Charlotte's Mother's Day photo was found to have been digitally altered.

Kate, who has long been the photographer behind her children's birthday pictures, also broke from convention with George's latest image. Whereas previous shots of the three Cambridge children have always been in color, this new black and white portrait captures George smiling warmly on a stone bench. Some speculated this change in aesthetic was a nod to the boy's growing maturity as he enters his tweens.

In another small but notable break from past tradition, only the cropped version of George's 11th birthday photo was initially uploaded to William and Kate's main Instagram feed. Swiping over to their story highlight revealed that the full, uncropped snap shows George wearing a friendship bracelet - something Kensington Palace declined to provide details on.

While keeping certain royal conventions grounded in tradition is important, it seems William and Kate are making subtle adjustments to suit their modern family as their children grow older. Their decision to share pictures directly on social media aligns with how most families celebrate special days in the digital age. It also allows them more control over the images amid past issues with photo agencies.

Some changes were likely made to respect George's budding privacy as he gains more independence. Releasing more casual, personal photos as opposed to formal portraiture shows the young prince living a rounded childhood. And breaking from rigid color standards with black and white could help separate his personhood from expectations of his royal duty.

Of course, George's evolving role within the monarchy was also on full display earlier in July when he joined his father William at the UEFA Euro 2024 final in Germany. The father-son outing proved a heartbreaking experience for the young royal as England were defeated by Spain. However, it presented an early opportunity for George to represent his country and spend quality time with William in a professional capacity.

George has seemed to relish taking on greater responsibilities within the royal family in recent months. In June, the eager 11-year-old joined his parents and siblings for Trooping the Colour to celebrate the Queen's official birthday. He also thoroughly enjoyed attending a Taylor Swift concert with William and Charlotte, interacting affectionately with the pop star backstage afterwards.

As George nears his teenage years, it's clear William and Kate are thoughtfully navigating traditions versus the realities of his generation. While certain customs will always be meaningful to uphold, selectively modernizing practices like photo releases allows George's experiences to remain personable. The casual friendship bracelet detail, in particular, conveys his childhood innocence remains intact despite a lifetime of royalty ahead. Overall, the Cambridge family's evolution shows the monarchy's ability to progress while honouring centuries of history.
