It has been a challenging year for the Princess of Wales after undergoing treatment for cancer earlier this year. However, she appears to be making a strong recovery and has now returned to some of her royal duties and engagements.

In January, Kate was admitted to hospital for an abdominal procedure where doctors fortunately found and removed precancerous cells. She then required a course of chemotherapy treatment over the following months. While undergoing treatment, Kate still managed to attend a few significant royal events such as Trooping the Colour in June.

In a personal video message released in September, Kate confirmed that she had finished her chemotherapy course. She spoke about gaining a renewed sense of hope and appreciation for life as she entered this new phase of recovery. Kate also said she was looking forward to slowly getting back to work and taking on a few more public engagements.

It seems Kate wasted no time in beginning to ease back into royal duties. Just this week, she held discussions at Windsor Castle about her fourth annual Christmas Carol concert which will be broadcast on Christmas Eve. It's expected that Kate will host the event and be joined by other members of the royal family.

Then on Thursday, in one of her first major public appearances since completing treatment, Kate attended a matinee showing of Jiselle at English National Ballet's performance at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London. In a message on Instagram, she praised the company and production, calling it "creativity at its best."

This signalled that the popular Princess is determined to support the arts, which is an area of focus for her royal work. The visit no doubt brought hope and joy to all those battling illness who see Kate as a symbol of strength and resilience through hardship.

According to reports, this engagement was only the fourth time Kate has been mentioned in the official Court Circular records of royal duties so far in 2022. Her two other appearances included Trooping the Colour and presenting the trophy at the Wimbledon men's final.

While Kate has been largely out of the public eye while recovering at home, she has still been undertaking some behind-the-scenes work like staff meetings that aren't formally recorded. One such unreported meeting was held this week at Windsor Castle.

During the meeting, Kate joined staff from her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood to discuss her ‘Shaping a Brighter Future’ programme launched last year. This initiative aims to highlight the importance of a child's formative years and spur further research in early childhood development - an issue which aides have described as Kate’s life's work passion.

So with this engagement and other work carried out in private, it seems the popular Princess is steadily increasing her royal duties again. And her cause of advocating for early years is clearly still a driving focus as she takes these initial steps back into public life following her health struggles.

Kate's recovery and return to work provides a much needed boost for the royal family. As one of their hardest working core members, her presence has undoubtedly been missed at events over the past year. According to reports, only Princess Anne surpasses Kate's pre-illness average of over 100 engagements annually.

While a royal's working day looks quite different than the average person, they still keep very busy schedules. The King in particular has a jam-packed diary full of State visits, charity work and meetings. Other senior royals like Prince William are also taking on an increasing number of responsibilities to support the monarchy.

Meanwhile, younger royals like Princess Eugenie and Beatrice have professional jobs outside of their royal duties. Eugenie is a director at an art gallery in London. So royal work-life does allow for a variety of approaches depending on one's role and stages of life.

Now on the road to recovery, Kate seems determined to resume her important work in advancing causes close to her heart. With renewed energy and appreciation, she appears inspired to make the most of every opportunity. Her return is a welcomed boost as the Princess of Wales embraces this next exciting chapter
