The iconic British children's television program Blue Peter has partnered with Prince William's prestigious Earthshot Prize to launch an exciting new competition that aims to inspire the next generation of young environmental leaders. The "Blue Peter Earthshot Competition" invites UK residents aged 5 to 15 to submit original concepts addressing one of the Earthshot Prize's five categories: fix our climate, protect and restore nature, clean our air, revive our oceans, and build a waste-free world.

Entrants are asked to describe their innovative ideas for a more sustainable future through a drawing or poster. Entries will be judged in age categories, with five overall winners chosen - one for each Earthshot category. Winners will receive a certificate, exclusive Blue Peter badge, and copy of the Earthshot Prize book. They will also be invited to participate in special filming with Blue Peter.

The competition aims to harness children's imaginations to envision the future they want to see. As Prince William, founder of the Earthshot Prize, stated, "I started the Earthshot Prize to search for solutions to the world's biggest environmental challenges and we want to find the next generation of young inventors who can make a change." Hannah Jones, CEO of the Earthshot Prize, added that they're "thrilled to partner with Blue Peter to inspire young minds to use their boundless imagination to envision the future they want to live in."

The competition has garnered support from five environmental champions who will introduce topics and present Blue Peter films about UK projects protecting the planet. This includes Steve backshall, who expressed hope that the competition will empower children to see that their ideas can come to life and make a real difference.

Teachers and students can engage with the competition through BBC Teach, which offers free classroom resources as part of its "Planet Create" challenges. The competition aims to inspire primary school pupils to think about the environment and sustainability in an engaging, fun way. It builds on Blue Peter's long-standing commitment to environmental issues, including its iconic Green Badge initiative since 1988.

By partnering with Blue Peter, the Earthshot Prize aims to harness the optimism and creativity of young people to drive environmental change. Sarah Meller, senior head of BBC Children's Commissioning 7+, said Blue Peter has a proud history of engaging kids in real-world issues through initiatives like the Green Badge. This competition could inspire the next generation of change-makers to tackle the urgent environmental challenges facing our planet.

Royal Support for the New Partnership

The Blue Peter Earthshot competition launch on September 6th received strong support from members of the royal family. Prince William, who founded the prestigious Earthshot Prize, acknowledges both the need to find solutions to environmental crises and empower youth leaders stepping up to create change.

At the launch event, William was joined by his cousin Zara Tindall in the royal box. Zara, who is herself an accomplished equestrian, has long supported both William and her father King Charles in their environmental efforts. As William's first cousin, Zara understands the pressures and responsibilities of royal life from experience but can live independently without titles or duties - making her uniquely positioned to provide personal support as family.

Zara warmly greeted William and his equerry at the event, clearly showing her continuing commitment to supporting both William as heir and King Charles in his new role. As a friend of Zara explained, she can rally beside family privately while still living freely - the best of both worlds. Her close bond with William was on full display in enthusiastically backing his latest initiative to inspire youth-led solutions through the Blues Peter partnership.
