King Charles announced in early February that he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer. This devastating news came as a shock to the royal family and people all over the world. Prince Harry, who now lives in California with his wife Meghan Markle and their children Archie and Lilibet, immediately decided to travel over 5,000 miles from the US to be with his father during this difficult time.
While the Duke of Sussex's desire to see his sick father was certainly understandable, it has been claimed that his visit may have inadvertently thrown a wrench in King Charles' recovery plans. When news broke that Harry was traveling to the UK from overseas, some medical experts expressed concerns that the Prince could potentially introduce new infections to the King while he underwent cancer treatment. As a result, Harry was reportedly only permitted to spend a short 30 minutes with his father, and they met at Buckingham Palace rather than the more personal setting of Sandringham Estate where Charles was recuperating.

According to a palace insider who spoke to The Sun, King Charles made a helicopter trip to Buckingham Palace specifically for his brief meeting with Harry, as doctors worried the father and son might spend too long together if they met at Sandringham. "There were concerns that if they met and spent time together at Sandringham, Harry wouldn’t want to leave, and Charles would find it difficult to say ‘no’ to him," the source claimed.
The 30 minute restriction understandably frustrated Harry, who had rushed half way around the world to offer his support during such a difficult family health crisis. However, the experts insist their top priority was minimizing any risks to the King's recovery as he underwent cancer treatment. While only a short visit, it did allow Harry the chance to see his father in person and express his well-wishes before returning home to California.

Since that initial trip in February, Prince Harry has returned to the UK just once in May for a quick stop to attend some charitable events. However, he did not get another opportunity to see King Charles. The new monarch has maintained a very busy schedule over the summer fulfilling his royal duties.
Just this past week, Harry and Meghan were in Colombia for a short visit focused on issues like gender equality, quality education and environmental stewardship. Photos from their trip showed the Sussexes warmly embracing young children they met. Body language expert Judi James analyzed these images and claimed they appeared to be sending a message to their critics.
"It seems like Harry and Meghan have another story they want to share with the world on this journey and that is their love for each other," James remarked. "Their touch screens have been a statement feature in the past but here they seem to want to get the message across in a very definitive and specific way."

While Harry and Meghan's public displays of affection help counter negative narratives about issues within their marriage, it does little to help address the underlying tensions with the royal family back home. The brief, difficult visit Harry was granted to see his ill father in February and their limited contact since has seemingly done little in the way of meaningful reconciliation.
With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September, the family dynamics have undoubtedly shifted even further. King Charles is now settled fully into his role, while Prince William's position as the heir is also cemented. It remains to be seen if opportunities will arise for deeper conversations between Harry, Meghan, and the rest of the Windsors as they all adjust to this new chapter.

Only time will tell if the family can work through their issues in a productive manner. For now, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex seem focused on building their post-royal lives across the pond in California, visiting global causes important to them, and raising their young children. But the constant tabloid speculation about further strains in Harry's relationship with his father and brother persist. With the royal family facing a period of transition, meaningful dialogue remains crucial to hopefully finding some peace and healing amongst their divides.
