According to The Mirror, As revealed in Katie Nicholl's book, "Kate: The Future Queen," Kate's 27th birthday in September 2008 was marked by a significant and unexpected decision by Prince William. At that time, rumors circulated that William was ready to propose, but instead, he surprised everyone by announcing his decision to join the Royal Air Force (RAF).
Having completed assignments with each section of the Armed Forces, Prince William faced a choice – return to the Household Cavalry or leave the forces to fulfill his royal duties. Opting for an RAF career path would afford him extra time and freedom before committing to full-time royal responsibilities, providing him with a level of independence his grandmother and father were denied.

However, for Kate, this decision signaled a deviation from the expected path. She had anticipated a proposal following William's military training, but the announcement meant a delay in their engagement. Nicholl writes, "With that single decision, Kate's life was turned upside down. She had expected a proposal once William had completed his military training, but instead, she was forced to accept that there would be no engagement any time soon. Kate would have to wait even longer."
Prince William's new role involved 18 months of training in Shropshire followed by two years at a remote location in the UK. Nicholl notes, "William was asking her to be an army wife - without the nuptials. Her frustration was understandable." Kate found the prospect challenging, particularly as her friends were settling down, and she felt left behind in her desire to marry and have children by the age of thirty.

Despite the distance and challenges, the couple managed to sustain their relationship. Prince William frequently made the 130-mile drive to Bucklebury to visit Kate at her parent's house. Finally, in 2010, after years of navigating the complexities of their situation, Prince William proposed, marking a significant milestone in their love story. Months later, they exchanged vows at Westminster Abbey, and now, almost 11 years into their marriage, they are proud parents to three beautiful children.
As the Princess of Wales celebrates her birthday today, she can reflect on how the challenges of the past ultimately strengthened her relationship with Prince William, leading to a love story that has captured the hearts of many.
